Wedding Garters - A Long Tradition
There's a long, colorful tradition behind the tossing of wedding garters at a newlywed couple's reception. Unfortunately for many young brides, this tradition actually started in the bedroom.

Considered one of the oldest traditions surrounding a couple's nuptials, the garter toss can be traced all the way back to the Dark Ages, when friends and family escorted the young newlyweds back to their marriage bed. In many instances these guests, usually close family members, stuck around to ensure that the couple consummated the marriage. If that weren't bad enough, over-eager witnesses sometimes snatched up the garter as evidence that the consummation had in fact taken place as expected; this keepsake was considered good luck. The tradition of tossing the garter grew out of this, as alarmed brides and grooms flung the undergarment out to memento-seekers to protect the bride's modesty. Later, the garter toss moved out of the bedroom and into the reception hall. Still considered an omen of good luck, the garter is now removed only by the groom - much to the bride's relief - and then is tossed or flung by the groom to the male guests. The one who catches the garter is said to be the next to marry.
